On St Patricks Day WBC Diamond Champion Sergio Martinez knocked out Matthew Macklin in the 11th round.
The true pound for pound champion of the world keeps winning in a fashionable way. Like an artist painting a masterpiece Sergio's victories are beautiful works of art.
Knocking down dangerous fighters that other fighters are afraid to test.
Here is a look at his previous five fights from past to present:
-He went to war with the heavier Kelly Pavlik for 12 rounds.
-Destroyed Paul Williams, with a vicious hook, in the 2nd round.
-Knocked out previously undefeated European Champion Sergiy Dzinziruk, a man who had never felt the canvas, in the 8th round.
-Put the dangerous undefeated Darren Barker through a boxing clinic before putting him away in the 11th round.
-Matthew Macklin was his recent victim
On April 10, Martinez promoter, Lou Dibella told The Boxing Lab "Since he started fighting on HBO he hasn't had easy fights for the most part"
Sadly Martinez is mostly known by die hard boxing fans because of the lack of named opponents.
Many fighters have dodged him man such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Miguel Cotto, Saul Alvarez, Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo, Antonio Margarito to name a few.
Or pretty much every Top Rank and Golden Boy fighter.
Unlike other "pound for pound champions" Martinez has fought the most dangerous fighters in the world in order to be considered pound for pound champion.
For example, the last time Manny Pacquiao fought a non Top Rank fighter was May 2009 when he fought the reckless Ricky Hatton.
After that Top Rank has been lining up Top Rank fighters that the Filipino fighter has had ease defeating.
-A shot Miguel Cotto.
-Joshua Clottey, who feared throwing a punch in fear of the oncoming barrage of punches.
- A long armed pushing forward fighter in Antonio Margarito.
-Over the hill "Sugar" Shane Mosley that was more concerned in tapping gloves than exchanging punches.
An, in my opinion lost the match against a Juan Manuel Marquez, but Pac Man was awarded the controversial decision.
Now, he is to fight an undeserving fighter in Timothy Bradley in June.
Bradley, After an 11- month self hiatus, and running from Amir Khan then signing with Top Rank, He struggled in November to defeat a 40 year old over the hill Joel Casamayor, but that body of work was enough to earn him a shot at Manny Pacquiao.
Sergio keeps on winning, and finally will have a shot at the limelight when he gets the winner of WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee who are scheduled to fight June 16th.
The son of the Mexican legend has been engaged in a verbal war with Martinez through twitter both claiming to be the true WBC middle weight champions.
The big fight in the works? according to Dibella "I would love to see what he could do event at a weight disavantage versus Floyd....After Cotto that is the only fight that makes sense for him"
If everything goes accordingly Martinez might be stepping into the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. sometime next year and that will be his true chance to leave an everlasting foot print in the boxing world and join the pantheon of champions reserved for the likes of Lewis, Ali, Frazier, Leonard, and Chavez.
I thank my lucky stars that I am alive to watch this man paint his masterpiece.
