Last night Timothy Bradley was a man on a mission
For 12 rounds he stood toe to toe with the Russian contender Ruslan Provodnikov. He took the Russians best shots and was awarded the decision
It is nothing against Bradley, but I have not enjoyed his recent fights. I watch boxing to see two guys drop their balls and squab. He did what seemed impossible and made his fight against Pacquiao boring to watch.
My brain is ruined by fights I used to watch as a kid. I guess most of the fights stem from Rocky movies, all offense and no defense. Strategy is thrown out the window and, the guys would take turns punch each other in the face till one of them would drop.
You know, something similar to human Rock em Sock em with brains. It sounds barabaric, but fuck it Chavez Sr, Rios, Matthysse, Pacquiao, Marquez do it.
Fighters like Bradley know how to win, but they dont win in an entertaining way. It's all head butts and running with him.
Personally I didn't want to see the Bradley fight. I was looking forward in seeing Nick Diaz fight George St. Pierre. GSP promised us that unlike his last 10 fights he would knock out the challenger out because he really really hates Nick Diaz. Meanwhile, Diaz was cussing up a storm and mean mugging his way into my hear. I truly believed the two would beat the shit out of each other.
But, that asshole Juan wanted to see the boxing fight, and thank goodness his stubborn ass made us watch the fight. We somehow managed to watch both fights.
Fight Night at the House UFC and Boxing Co-existing |
Bradley put on a show for the few thousand people at the Home Depot Center in Carson that night. He fought toe to toe with the dangerous Russian for 12 rounds taking punishment and even getting knocked down twice, although the ref mistakenly called the first one a slip. He took the challengers over hand right over and over ,and it seemed that he was out in his feet more than once. But, Bradley fought back bravely and masterfully using his speed, combinations and body work to keep the Russian in control.
He fought dangerously prompting his trainer Joel Diaz to threaten to stop the fight if Bradley would not listen to his strategy. Bradley knew that Diaz wouldn't stop the fight, so he continued to fight the way he wanted. He knew he was a better boxer than the Russian, and if the Russian hadn't knocked him out in the first two rounds he had survived the worst of the onslaught.
The Russian by his part showed tremendous heart. He carried a vicious cut above his left eye and was visibly winded. He was reminiscent of those meaty 1930's prize fighters. Relentless in his attack no matter how bad he was getting tagged by the obviously better fighter.
Bradley won the fight by decision, but he also won himself new fans. Now boxing heads are salivating on the thought last night's Timothy Bradley fighting Juan Manuel Marquez or Brandon Rios.
For his beautiful fight last night Timothy Bradley receives the Russell Crowe "Are you Not Entertained" award of the night
Meanwhile in the UFC Championship fight between the two hated rivals GSP and Nick Diaz it was pretty much this for 20 Minutes, what a waste of money and time.
